Improve Yourself!

Making resolutions last year-roundThe beginning of a new year generally inspires us to make resolutions and to set goals. The purpose of this is ultimately to improve ourselves, to polish our strengths and to chip away at our weaknesses. Elder M. Russell Ballard of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said:
"We can become the masters of our own destinies by practicing self-discipline and by setting worthy goals that will lead to higher ground so that we can become what our Heavenly Father wants us to become."
Learning to master ourselves is one of the main purposes of this earth. We learn, grow, change and improve ourselves. God loves us just the way we are, but like parents, He does want us to learn to walk on our own two feet. We each have an amazing potential inside of us, we just need to discover it and work at it. As President Dieter F. Uchtdorf said:
"May I invite you to rise to the great potential within you. But don’t reach beyond your capacity. Don’t set goals beyond your capacity to achieve. Don’t feel guilty or dwell on thoughts of failure. Don’t compare yourself with others. Do the best you can, and the Lord will provide the rest. Have faith and confidence in Him, and you will see miracles happen in your life and the lives of your loved ones."
As you set goals this year, consider objectives that will make you a better person, improve your life and the lives of those around you and that will ultimately lead to joy and happiness. Maybe you want to spend more time with your family, read scriptures daily, pray several times a day, serve others, and lose bad habits like being judgmental, gossiping, negativity or other practices that are best left alone. Making improvements in yourself will lead to more happiness and satisfaction and quality of life.
